what is it?
Visual Stress is a perceptual processing condition that causes reading difficulties, headaches and visual problems from exposure to patterns in text, such as lines of text.
common symptoms
Because the brain is working so hard to cope with all the symptoms of the visual perceptual dysfunction, this may contribute towards multi-sensory overload meaning they could be sensitive to sound or perhaps smell.
They can often feel extremely tired at the end of the day as working on a concentrated task for 20 minutes can feel like hours to their brain so therefore a 6 hour school day could feel like an impossible task.
what can we do to help?
we can help provide your children with the right equipment to overcome visual stress, being if we conclude that is the difficulty, for example we can provide coloured overlays whether that being for your computer or paper to enhance their reading abilities as well as referrals for certain prescription glasses that can be useful. Your child needs to have seen an eye specialist (optician/optometrist etc before this to ensure there are no other underlying eye problems). We work closely with eye specialists to ensure the process meets the correct criteria.
